Abstract

Character education integrated into education system can be seen from foreign language curriculum such as English curriculum. One of the ways to improve competency of English teaching learning based on character building for students of SMP in Baubau is introducing character values on English learning material in school. Therefore, this research would try to analyze English learning material used by SMPN 4 Baubau as an accredited A public school by investigating character values within. This research aimed to know whether English learning material used by SMPN 4 Baubau as an accredited A public school contained character values or not, and to know whether the character value was able to assist students’ character building or not. This research used a descriptive qualitative using content analysis design. The result of the research were: 1) English learning material used by students at Seventh grade of SMPN 4 Baubau already contained character values. 2) Character values on its learning material could not effective yet to assist character building of students and strengthening the character. There are some consideration as the factors on it, which were; a) English learning material and lesson plan used by teacher did not contain character values. b) Less of students’ care and awarenes toward teacher’s advice and suggestion. c) There is no strong punishment for undiscipline students.
