The choice of profession is a crucial stage in one's career planning and is influenced by various internal and external factors. In the context of the teaching profession, especially mathematics teachers, low student interest is a serious challenge, especially in strategic areas such as Balikpapan City which has an important role in supporting the development of the National Capital City (IKN) of the Archipelago. Based on field observations and questionnaire distribution, it was found that the interest of students in Balikpapan to become mathematics teachers is still very low. This is reflected in the low number of applicants for the Mathematics Education Study Program at Balikpapan University and the minimal number of students who expressed interest in the profession. This study aims to identify and understand the factors that cause low student interest in becoming mathematics teachers. The study was conducted through a literature study of six scientific articles from within and outside the country. The results of the study produced 29 statements that were used to compile the questionnaire instrument. The statements are grouped into 3 predicted indikators, namely internal factors, external factors, and characteristics of the mathematics subject itself.
